Cushing’s Annual Events
There are three annual events that the Cushing Chamber of Commerce provides each year sometimes combined with other organizations and the reasons for providing them are all different.
The first event mid-way in each year is the BBQ ‘N Blues Festival which is the second weekend in June. When the festival was initiated 21 years ago, the purpose of the festival was to pay tribute to the pipeline companies located in Cushing. The storage and distribution of oil has been around almost as long as Cushing. While it has not been the only business sector in Cushing it is the economic driver of our community.
The BBQ ‘N Blues Festival has evolved a lot in 22 years. The looks of the festival in 22 years has changed dramatically and continues to change. However, the purpose of the festival remains clear to the citizens of the community. To say thank-you to the pipeline companies who provide this community jobs and keeps our economy stable.
The second event which comes in the fall of each year is the Festival in the Park. It takes place on the second Saturday in October in Cushing’s Memorial Park. The purpose of the festival is to provide the citizens of Cushing and the surrounding area an event that is family-oriented as well as a cultural experience.
Not only are their food vendors made up of the various non-profit organizations but also children’s activities, musical entertainment, a chili cook-off provided by the Lions’ Club, Run for the Mums provided by the Geographic Club and a juried art show sponsored by Lachenmeyer Arts Center. Artists not only from Oklahoma but surrounding states will attend and display their artwork in hopes that they will be able to sell some of their works.
The third event is the Christmas Parade. It is held on a Saturday prior to Christmas in downtown Cushing. On that particular Saturday, Santa Claus makes a visit to Cushing and is given a ride on one of the Cushing Fire Department’s vehicles. Not only Santa is in the parade but many of the businesses, non-profit organizations as well as school groups. They create floats or ride in pick-ups, walk or ride horse-back in downtown Cushing. The hour to one hour and one-half parade is the highlight of Cushing’s Christmas Season. The downtown businesses all participate as well as some food and hot drink vendors set up in downtown Cushing for the event as well. The purpose for the chamber’s involvement in the parade is to try to stimulate Christmas shopping at home in our merchant’s stores.
